KENAZ — An office interior for Kenaz

Commissioned by KENAZ, a training and consultancy firm based in the former PERSIL factory, i.s.m.architecten designed the interior of an unfinished office floor with only a limited number of fixed elements: the concrete structure, the position of the windows, the entrance and the sanitary core.

The project approaches the open floorplate as a continuous spatial landscape rather than a series of enclosed rooms. The programme — consisting of an entrance/winter garden, reception area, meeting rooms, workspaces and a director’s office — is organised through a gradual change in level. Four floor heights were introduced in relation to the window positions and the varying degrees of privacy required by the different functions: the further one moves into the office, the more elevated and secluded the spaces become.

The raised floor structure simultaneously integrates storage and technical infrastructure, allowing the space to remain visually open and adaptable over time. Cabinets slide beneath adjacent platforms, while installations are concealed within the intermediary zones below the floor.

The interior unfolds as a carefully sequenced architectural promenade of stairs, ramps, partitions and furniture. In the entrance area, suspended lighting, plants and outdoor furniture establish the atmosphere of a winter garden and informal meeting space. Mirrors are strategically integrated to reflect daylight deeper into the interior and visually extend the space. Towards the workspaces, the atmosphere gradually becomes more focused and formal. Vertical dividers in tulip wood define rhythm and spatial boundaries while maintaining openness and visual continuity throughout the office.
